In the late 1970’s, Jim Norris, the publisher of a new national magazine called Canadian Musician, asked if I'd be on a panel at the very first “business of music” seminar.  It was an honour to present to a large gathering of Canadian music professionals.  Here we are, almost 50 years later, and once again opportunity from Jim comes knocking.

Through his friend Eric Alper, two weeks ago, Jim Norris asked me to write a regular column for his new online newsletter, “Canadian Musician Spotlight”.

Donna and LeRoy are Canadian country music legends.  They’re legends because for 17 years, millions of Canadians tuned in every Friday night to watch them on the CBC’s Tommy Hunter Show.   In the 1980's, Whiskey Jack joined that show and entertained those same fans with their weekly comedy segment, the Ol' Back Porch. In 2025 these two Canadian country music greats come together to celebrate those years.

Our Stompin' Tom Show tour is in it's 10th year.  It's never been sold as a “bluegrass” show.  After much thought and executive meetings at Whiskey Jack head office, that will change immediately.

Starting today, this show will now be billed as an all Canadian bluegrass show presented by one of Canada's top bluegrass bands, Whiskey Jack.  We honour Stompin' Tom's legacy by singing his songs in a style he loved.

With festivals, theatres and musicians struggling to stay afloat these days, we're particularly grateful that we have a solid lineup of shows booked for 2024.  

Our tour begins at the Grand Theatre in Fergus Ontario on Sunday April 7 at 2 PM.  Then in May, we travel to the “new” Marble Arts Centre in Tweed, the “new” Spire in Kingston, the historic Aeolian Hall in London.

This odyssey began  in 2014 and for our 10th anniversary in 2024, we're aiming for our busiest season ever.  

With many shows already booked for 2024, we celebrate our last show of 2023 at the venerable Free Times Cafe.  Our gracious hostess, Judy Perly continues to offer music fans an exceptionally charming, comfortable and inviting place to dine and listen to excellent music.  

It's on College Street, steps from the U of T campus, the Annex, Parkdale, Kensington and more.

Here at Whiskey Jack Headquarters, the staff is working feverishly to get everything in place for a very busy fall tour.

A stunning turn of events has caused us to stop and take stock.  Yesterday, the town of Espanola lost their 
primary employer, Domtar pulp and paper.  Over 450 men and women lost their jobs.  We are scheldued to play at their Legion on October 8, 2023.  Regardless of how many tickets are sold, our show will go on.  

I took a minute to reflect on some similar circumstances we encountered on…

Walt Grealis at RPM (remember him and them?) will not be receiving a copy of Whiskey Jack's first single release in 37 years. It's called Beautiful World. The official video was released 12 hours ago… and it looks like this!

Recently, I did something I should have done years ago.  I became a card-carrying member of the Royal Canadian Legion.  I'm a proud member of Branch 10, 1083 Pape Avenue, Toronto, On.

I once was a long time member of the Naval Club on Hayden Street in Toronto but I let that membership lapse.  For that I'm sorry.

To commemorate my new membership, Whiskey Jack is formally adding a Canadian Armed Forces segment to our Stompin' Tom show.  It's based on Tom's song, Blue Berets.  We recorded this song with Tom in…

Never has it been more challenging to, as Frank Sinatra famously sings, “start spreading the news”.  We enjoy every imaginable tool to communicate with each other but the sheer volume of words and images floating around the atmosphere is too much to handle.

Therefore, this platform has become our main tool for telling our fans what is going on in our music world and what to look forward to in the weeks to come.  Thank you for reading this.
