In anticipation of our show on June 4, 2025 at the Loft in Sault Ste. Marie, I was inspired to write a nostalgia piece when I woke up yesterday morning.   Around 9:30 AM, I sent it to those in charge at Sootoday.com and this morning I've been fielding calls from readers across Canada telling me "you're in Sootoday".

First, it was a wild night at the “Shoe”.  300+ fans was impressive but what was noticed by many was the youth of the crowd outnumbered the old geezers…and if that wasn't impressive enough, I rec'd this message from Bill Heffernan, a long time fan, with a bit of grey on his head, a man who knows what he speaks:

In the late 1970’s, Jim Norris, the publisher of a new national magazine called Canadian Musician, asked if I'd be on a panel at the very first “business of music” seminar.  It was an honour to present to a large gathering of Canadian music professionals.  Here we are, almost 50 years later, and once again opportunity from Jim comes knocking.

Through his friend Eric Alper, two weeks ago, Jim Norris asked me to write a regular column for his new online newsletter, “Canadian Musician Spotlight”.

A busy 2024 has produced some thrills and spills (mostly thrills) but the biggest is undoubtedly audience reaction to our new song, I've Got The O L D.   This Douglas John Cameron original has touched a nerve.  This is what the audiences are saying:

Throughout the year, Douglas and I perform a variety of shows.  In the summer, as a duo, we drive many miles on our 2 lane highways in the north singing songs for campers at Provincial Parks.  In the spring and fall we take our Stompin' Tom show on the road.  These shows include the band featuring our great fiddler/guitarist, Billy MacInnis.   There's no hibernation for us in the winter.  We then return to our duo set-list and explore the clubs in Toronto.

Donna and LeRoy are Canadian country music legends.  They’re legends because for 17 years, millions of Canadians tuned in every Friday night to watch them on the CBC’s Tommy Hunter Show.   In the 1980's, Whiskey Jack joined that show and entertained those same fans with their weekly comedy segment, the Ol' Back Porch. Over the years, Whiskey Jack has performed in hundreds of Legions across Canada. My first memory was the Legion on Great Northern Road in 1966 when I’d attend the weekly teen dance. My memory is that it was capacity each night and the dance floor was always full.

Our tour begins at the Grand Theatre in Fergus Ontario on Sunday April 7 at 2 PM.  Then in May, we travel to the “new” Marble Arts Centre in Tweed, the “new” Spire in Kingston, the historic Aeolian Hall in London.

With many shows already booked for 2024, we celebrate our last show of 2023 at the venerable Free Times Cafe.  Our gracious hostess, Judy Perly continues to offer music fans an exceptionally charming, comfortable and inviting place to dine and listen to excellent music.  

It's on College Street, steps from the U of T campus, the Annex, Parkdale, Kensington and more.

Here at Whiskey Jack Headquarters, the staff is working feverishly to get everything in place for a very busy fall tour.

A stunning turn of events has caused us to stop and take stock.  Yesterday, the town of Espanola lost their 
primary employer, Domtar pulp and paper.  Over 450 men and women lost their jobs.  We are scheldued to play at their Legion on October 8, 2023.  Regardless of how many tickets are sold, our show will go on.

Walt Grealis at RPM (remember him and them?) will not be receiving a copy of Whiskey Jack's first single release in 37 years. It's called Beautiful World. The official video was released 12 hours ago… and it looks like this!

Recently, I did something I should have done years ago.  I became a card-carrying member of the Royal Canadian Legion.  I'm a proud member of Branch 10, 1083 Pape Avenue, Toronto, On.

I once was a long time member of the Naval Club on Hayden Street in Toronto but I let that membership lapse.  For that I'm sorry.

Never has it been more challenging to, as Frank Sinatra famously sings, “start spreading the news”.  We enjoy every imaginable tool to communicate with each other but the sheer volume of words and images floating around the atmosphere is too much to handle.

Therefore, this platform has become our main tool for telling our fans what is going on in our music world and what to look forward to in the weeks to come.  Thank you for reading this.
